Free Classic Movies

Full-length classic films you can watch free and legally, because they're in the public domain in the United States. Every one is checked before it goes up, and re-checked every week.

Coming soon

Every 1 January, another year of films enters the US public domain. These go up the day they're free:

  • Dracula (1931): free in the US from 1 January 2027
  • Frankenstein (1931): free in the US from 1 January 2027

How we make sure every film is free to show

  • Old enough, or properly lapsed. Films first published in the US 1930 or earlier are out of copyright by age (95-year term). Newer films only qualify if they are American and their copyright lapsed for a missing notice or renewal, and we cite where that's recorded.
  • The story has to be free too. If a film is based on a book, play or song that someone still owns, we don't show it, even if the film itself lapsed.
  • The plain original only. No restored, colourised, re-scored or narrated versions: those can carry new copyright of their own.
  • US visitors only. Public domain rules differ by country, so the player only starts in the United States.
  • Checked every week against Wikidata, Wikipedia's list of US public domain films and the Internet Archive copy we play.
