A saintly London doctor, goaded by a cynical friend into wondering about his darker side, invents a potion that splits him in two: the respectable Jekyll and the leering, spider-fingered Hyde. John Barrymore, then America's most celebrated stage actor, performs the first transformation almost entirely with his face and body before the make-up takes over, and it's still startling to watch. The story comes from Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella, with a romance added for the screen. It's an early example of a horror film that is really about temptation, and Barrymore's Hyde set the template for every version since.
Watch it if you like classic monster stories, great physical acting, or Victorian gothic tales.
