A masked figure haunts the cellars beneath the Paris Opera House, coaching a young singer from the shadows and terrorising anyone who stands between her and the lead role. Lon Chaney, the 'man of a thousand faces', designed his own make-up, and the moment the singer pulls off his mask was so shocking in 1925 that cinemas reportedly kept smelling salts on hand. The film is built on Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel, the same story Andrew Lloyd Webber later turned into his musical. The opera house sets, the underground lake and the masked ball sequence are still spectacular a century on.
