In medieval Paris, the deformed bell-ringer Quasimodo is used by a scheming nobleman to kidnap the street dancer Esmeralda, then humiliated in the square, until she is the only one who shows him kindness. Universal built a full-scale copy of Notre Dame's front for this film, and Lon Chaney put himself through painful make-up and a heavy hump harness to play Quasimodo. It was one of the biggest hits of the silent era and made Chaney a star. The story follows Victor Hugo's 1831 novel, the same one behind the later animated musical, but this version is far darker.
