An accountant walks into a Los Angeles police station to report a murder: his own. He has been poisoned, it can't be cured, and he has a day or two to find out who did it and why. Most of the film is that race against the clock, told in flashback, as Edmond O'Brien sweats his way from San Francisco jazz clubs to shady import offices. It has one of the best opening hooks in film noir, real city locations and a sharp, cynical script. A notary's signature on a bill of sale turns out to matter more than anyone could have guessed.
Watch it if you like film noir, mysteries with a ticking clock, or stories told backwards.
Why is it free?
Its US copyright lapsed: US law at the time required a copyright notice on release and a renewal after 28 years, and the owners didn't keep it up, so it entered the public domain.
